Glossary
This glossary explains the website, Google and payment words you will hear from us, from Shopify and from Google, each in a sentence or two. Developers use a lot of words nobody else does; none of them should stop you running your own shop.

Glossary
A domain is your address on the internet, such as yourshop.co.uk. You rent it from a registrar a year at a time, so keep auto-renew switched on.
Shopify is the system your website runs on. It hosts your site, takes card payments, sends order emails and keeps your products, orders and customers in one place, and you pay Shopify directly.
A theme is the design layer of a Shopify site: the layout, colours, fonts and sections. Changing the theme changes how the site looks, not your products or orders.
DNS is the address book of the internet. DNS records at your registrar tell browsers where your website is and tell email where to deliver your messages.
SEO, or search engine optimisation, is the work that gets your site shown when people search for what you sell: clear page titles, good descriptions, fast pages and useful content.
Search Console is a free Google tool that shows which searches bring people to your site and warns you about problems. We set it up in your name.
A Google Business Profile is your free listing on Google Maps and Search, with your hours, photos, reviews and a website button. For a local food business it is often the first thing customers see.
Structured data is hidden code on your pages that tells search engines facts in a form they can read, such as your opening hours, address, menu and FAQs.
Merchant Center is Google's tool for showing your products on Google Shopping and in search results. Your Shopify site sends it your products, prices and stock.
Commission is a share of each order taken by a platform, as the delivery apps do. Veritas UI takes no commission on your website orders.
A payout is the money Shopify sends to your bank: your sales less card fees, refunds and any disputes. Each payout is listed in your Shopify admin.
A chargeback is when a customer asks their bank to reverse a card payment. Shopify tells you, and you can send evidence that the order was genuine and delivered or collected.
